  • A Windgate Matching Grant to Build The 3D Arts Complex Expand dropdown

    The School of Fine art and Design is Building a New 3D Arts Complex! The Eastern Michigan University Schoolhouse of Art and Design is preparing for the next stage of its evolution thanks to a $2.2 1000000 Windgate Foundation grant. The funds from the Windgate Foundation will exist utilized as a part of a matching gift agreement with the University to construct a new 3D Arts Complex in the School of Art and Pattern on the University'south campus in Ypsilanti.

    The Schoolhouse of Art and Design at Eastern Michigan University will at long final be able to complete the Arts Complex that was initiated in part by the meaning refurbishing of the Sculpture Studio. This final structure project will provide space for all of ceramics, article of furniture design, 3D Pattern, sculpture, and our metalsmithing areas to come together in one building that is built to conform such intense processes equally these. We will establish studios that well serve each area, rather than shoehorning our equipment and needs into previously used buildings on campus that were built for entirely different purposes.

    The School of Art & Design and the Eastern Michigan University Foundation are embarking on a $400,000 fundraising campaign for the completion and outfitting of the new Windgate 3D Arts Complex.

    If we raise $200,000 by April xxx, 2022, the Windgate Foundation volition friction match our fund total! You can donate today or make a pledge and pay off the pledge over the side by side five years.

  • Painting Students Featured In International Exhibition Expand dropdown

    EMU Painting students featured in an exhibition in collaboration with VCUarts Qatar students in Doha, Qatar, titled "Visible Cities: VCUarts Qatar and Eastern Michigan University."

    Working collaboratively beyond the globe, painting students from EMU were partnered with painting students from VCUarts Qatar in Doha, Qatar. After reading passages from Italo Calvino's classic "Invisible Cities," students were asked to contemplate the idea of "place," and share photos of their chosen place via Instagram with their partners from one-half a world away. Students so created several painting sketches from the shared photos, exploring the concept of different "visual languages." Lastly, students each created one concluding painting that explored the use of multiple visual languages in one painting while simultaneously capturing the feeling of both places.

    Conference presentation:  Pam Stewart presented a paper on March 15  at this year's meeting of the American Association for Italian Studies (AAIS) held at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, NC.

    AAIS is an international organization dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of Italian culture. Her paper, "Reinventing the Cross in Early Modern Milan: Memory, Ritual, and the City equally Palimpsest" was included in a series of panels on "afterlives" and repurposing.

  • Masters of Art and Design Association Spring Studio Tour Aggrandize dropdown

    On March 15, 2018, the Masters of Art and Pattern Association (Formerly the Arts Masters Association or AMA) held a tour of studio spaces across campus. The evening included not only displays of current and in progress work by graduate students in Cartoon, Printmaking, Metalsmithing, Fibers, Graphic Design and Ceramics, but besides many demonstrations. Visitors were able to watch screen printing and take home a limited edition print designed especially for the event and were able to try a multifariousness of handbuilding techniques in ceramics. The evening ended with the grand finale of a statuary pour pb by Prof. Brian Nelson in the Sculpture studio.

    The MADA volition be hosting a Studio Tour once more this fall semester, date and time for the upshot will be posted soon.

  • Prof. Ferguson Wins Manifest One thousand Jury Prize Expand dropdown

    Jason Furguson'southward 2017 slice, "Anamorph" won Manifest Gallery's 1st Annual Grand Jury Prize. The cash award for this prize is $2,500. The Prize featured a pool of twoscore finalist works by 38 artists, representing 30 different exhibitions. Out of 40 finalists for the Prize a 2-phase jury of sixteen arts professionals from across the U.Southward. selected the winning work.

  • Re-branding of Riverside Art Heart Expand dropdown

    Leslie Atzmon and Ryan Molloy, along with graphic design students were gifted the Sappi Paper Ideas that Matter Grant to re-brand the Riverside Art Center into a customs art hub for Ypsilanti, Mi. This project included the creation of a 'Toolkit' with 48 creative projects for local youth and their families. The project ran from Oct. 2017- Apr. 2018.

    It is with heartfelt thank y'all that nosotros say goodbye to four esteemed faculty members this spring. All of them take been assets non only to the School of Art & Blueprint, just to the greater art community as well.

    Dr. Grechen Otto is retiring after over 30 years of teaching metalsmithing here at EMU. A graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Art, Dr. Otto had not but made extraordinary work (see faculty artwork tab) but also hosted regional metals shows and mentored many graduate students.

    Diana Pancioli is retiring after over 25 years in the ceramics department hither at EMU. A graduate of Alfred University, her dedicated focus on functional arts and crafts will be missed. In 2016, Pancioli hosted 'After All These Years...' an international bear witness of functional ceramics.

    Dr. Ellen Shwartz is retiring after over 40 years teaching art history here at EMU. Her scholarly focus is on Byzantine fine art, and she has numerous publications on that topic.

    Tom Venner is retiring afterward over 20 years at EMU, in his tenure here he has taught ceramics as well equally serving as Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences.

    Professor John DeHoog was awarded Get-go Prize at the Midland Eye for the Arts Annual Greater Michigan Fine art Exhibition for a chiffonier/sculpture titled Abnormal Growth.  The showroom was juried by Jason Franz, founder and master curator of Manifest Gallery in Cincinnati and runs through Nov 5, 2017.  John was too awarded the Phil Chmura Memorial Award at the Muskegon Museum of Art'due south 2017 Michigan Regional Exhibition for a sculpture titled, Stepper and Wrecker.  It runs through November viii, 2017.

    A group of Eastern Michigan University students joined fourteen other universities participating this leap in one of North America's most prestigious piece of furniture design events—the International Contemporary Article of furniture Off-white, held in the Jacob Javits Convention Centre in Manhattan.

    The EMU display included a freeform bent wood davenport, a meticulously crafted dining chair, a sculptural chair featuring pyrography, a reclaimed walnut coffee table, and a pair of juvenile stools with special features for children to play with.

    For EMU graduate student Laura Earle, it was a singular thrill of her creative lifetime. She displayed a variety of her highly artistic designs, received great feedback, and also met Wendell Castle—whom she calls "the Paul McCartney of furniture design."

    Earle, a graduate student in the article of furniture blueprint program in the EMU School of Fine art & Design, spearheaded the trip for the group, which included two introductory students, a continuing instruction pupil and two recent graduates.

    Attendees included Lorena Ganser, an undergraduate student concentrating in drawing and painting; Dulce Morales, an undergraduate in piece of furniture blueprint; Esraa Malky, a graduate student in interior design; Sara Steenbergh, a continuing pedagogy student in furniture pattern; and recent furniture design graduates Melissa Judd and Taj Ali.

    "Each student shared their experience and skillset, making meaningful contributions to putting the exhibition together," Earle said. "For instance, Sara Steenbergh helped write a grant proposal. Taj Ali managed warehousing. Melissa Judd oversaw shipping. Then, in addition to creating cute article of furniture to display, each student shouldered some of the authoritative work to make the exhibition a success."

    Participating schools included the Rhode Isle School of Pattern, known as i of the elevation art schools in the state; along with the University of Iowa, the University of Oregon, the Rochester Constitute of Technology and Virginia Tech University.

    The fair is billed equally the premier North American global design showcase for furniture, flooring, lighting and other accessories, attracting more than 700 exhibitors and 33,000 attendees. The annual event as well features a schools program, aimed at fostering emerging pattern talent from universities such as Eastern Michigan.

    "It's a very prestigious show," said Sandra Murchison, director of the School of Fine art and Blueprint. "Having our student piece of work so well received at the ICFF is a real vote of confidence for the Article of furniture Pattern Program hither at Eastern."

    Earle exhibited several designs, including a distinctively shaped steel chair, an accent table fabricated of aluminum cast into walnut, and interlocking felt ottomans noted past Design Milk on its "The All-time of ICFF" web log. Earle's animatronic wall divider caught the heart of several attending hospital architects interested in discussing such an installation for children'southward cancer wards. Animatronic refers to the use of robotic devices to emulate an animal, in this case fish.

    Other EMU pupil designs included a freeform bent wood davenport, a meticulously crafted dining chair, a sculptural chair featuring pyrography (the art of decorating wood or leather by burning a design on the surface with a heated metallic signal), a reclaimed walnut coffee tabular array, and a pair of juvenile stools with special features for children to play with.

    The group, which stayed in a youth hostel, received financial support from the Schoolhouse of Art and Design and a grant from the Article of furniture Society, a nonprofit, educational arrangement headquartered in Asheville, N.C.

    "It was phenomenal," Earle says of the experience. "Information technology was life changing for all of the students. It was very gratifying to watch their world open upwardly."

    Earle savored her meeting with Castle, whom she calls "a rock star" of the furniture world—a legendary artist that everyone in the field knows and admires.

    "Nosotros talked about converting a five-axis robotic arm for CNC milling," Earle said of a specialized, computer-controlled milling technique the two discussed. "It was so geeky and wonderful."

    Earle, from Pittsfield Township, has a background in graphic and product pattern, earning her undergraduate degree from Purdue University in visual advice pattern and industrial pattern.

    Only, with her children grown, she began graduate studies at Eastern. She was in the interior design program at commencement, but took a furniture design class and was enthralled.

    "I really dear the sculptural chemical element of it," she says of her studies. "I'm enjoying myself immensely. When you hit your sugariness spot, the sky'southward the limit."

    Amy Sacksteder: Easement

    Faculty member Amy Sacksteder's recent work is currently on view at Alma Higher's Flora Kirsch Beck Gallery through Thursday, March 16. The exhibition features work on newspaper, paintings, and a glass and bronze wall installation that was fabricated with the help of EMU alumni Illana Houten, Jessica Tenbusch, and Elize Jekabson.

    From Alma Higher's press release:

    The exhibition, titled "Easement," plays off of the ii potentially contradictory definitions of the term — to abate fears and the right to utilize or gain access to someone else'due south property for a specific purpose.

    "In the wake of the election, inauguration, Dakota Access Pipeline turmoil and climate modify, land rights have been very much on my mind," says Sacksteder.

    Among the works to be showcased are portions of the series "Cairn" and "Fear Souvenirs." The latter includes works from 2016 and 2017.

    The exhibition will culminate in a closing exhibition and 7:30 p.1000. artist lecture on March 16, 2017.

    Emergent Effect, curated by EMU alumni and the founders of Ypsi Alloy Studios, highlights the intersecting work and common voice of 16 of the studio's resident artists.

    Exhibition curators Ilana Houten, Elize Jekabson, and Jessica Tenbusch launched Ypsi Alloy Studios in 2015 in response to decreasing artist studio workspaces throughout the region. Since and then, the studio has been growing. Emergent Effect showcases the work of the studio'southward individual artists and highlights shared meaning and shared ideas through the artwork of artists who work across from each other.

  • Janet Koplos Lecture Today Expand dropdown

    Janet Koplos, co-author of Makers: A History of American Studio Craft, was for 18 years a staff editor at Fine art in America magazine, remains a contributing editor to the magazine, and also served every bit invitee editor of American Arts and crafts mag before its deviation from New York. Among her credits in ceramic criticism are essays for books and catalogs on Toshiko Takaezu, Karen Karnes, Kathy Erteman, Richard De Vore and Tom Turner and Barbara Diduk. She is an writer of The Unexpected: Artists Ceramics of the 20th Century (published in Holland) and is completing a book on American functional pottery, research for which was supported with a grant from the Center for Craft, Creativity and Pattern in Due north Carolina.

    Koplos has also written extensively on other craft mediums equally well every bit on American, Japanese and Dutch contemporary art. She lived in Nihon in the '80s and published Contemporary Japanese Sculpture in 1990. She has written about 2,500 articles, reviews and essays in more than 2 dozen periodicals over the last 30 years, writing on Martin Puryear, Leslie Dill, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Oliver Herring, Rona Pondick, Ursula von Rydingsvard and David Nash, among others. She lectures, critiques and juries frequently, and occasionally teaches and curates. She is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Minnesota's Schoolhouse of Journalism and Mass Advice and holds a masters degree in art history from Illinois Land University. She was named an Honorary Fellow of the American Craft Council in 2010. In 2013 she relocated from New York City to St. Paul, Minnesota. In 2015 she received and Fine art Writers Grant from the Warhol Foundation and Creative Capital to back up research for a book on the New Art Examiner, an alternative art journal based in Chicago from 1973-2002.

    Amy Sacksteder's work

    In the winter semester, faculty member Amy Sacksteder's work has been featured in issue half-dozen of Fresh Paint Magazine and in several exhibitions including the group shows 6th Annual Drawing Discourse at the University of N Carolina, Asheville and Urban Ecologies curated past Barometry Projects at the Galveston Fine art Center in Texas. Recent drawings and a new cast bronze and cast drinking glass wall installation take been featured in a two-person exhibition (with Wayne State faculty member Adrian Hatfield) at Neon Heater Gallery in Findlay, Ohio for much of March. This work travels to the Dayton Visual Art Center for an upcoming (May-June) solo prove entitled The Interior.

    The wall installation (particular pictured higher up) was realized through collaboration with and the hard work of EMU alumni Ilana Houten and Jessica Tenbusch, the generous guidance and expertise of sculpture professor Brian Nelson, and the fine Adobe Illustrator skills of painting professor Chris Hyndman. Sculpture alumnus Rob Todd fabricated the frames for Sacksteder'southward new torso of drawings. This piece of work was supported by an Art Department Research and Development Grant.

    An Artificial Relationship to Nature: Work by Jason DeMarte

    Confected examines our cultural tendency to idealize the natural world while continually trying to improve upon it. Meanwhile, underneath the bright colors is an oppressive sense of disenchantment. By "improving" on the natural elements with lighting and post processing, nature becomes just another commercial good, victim to our materials desires. Carefully arranged, and and so "sweetened" with sugary items and brilliant main colors, DeMarte's confections are indulgent treats that play with the boundary between the contrived and the natural. In the end the pieces mimic a consumer economy screaming for our attention and demanding that we desire more.
